Entertainment is a huge part of our lives. We listen to music almost
constantly and movies, books, and television have impact on our lives. This
page is dedicated to the musicians, artists, movies, television, and books that
we love right now, and have loved in the past. If you would like to show up on
this page, email us/link us to some of your work.
The artists this month were chosen by Kerstyne.
The 1st of each month a new group of artists as well as a spotlight
artist is chosen. When things pick up around here, it will be weekly, and we
will have an archive page of all the past artists.
Spotlight on:
« Lara Brehm.
This 16 year old has more talent in her little finger than a lot of musicians
these days have in their entire bodies. She also has a passion and drive that I
find respectable. My favorite track right now is ‘Undertow’ and I
cannot get it out of my head.
Other great artists this month:
« Hello Saferide.
I first found her song My Best Friend
from AfterEllen; the lyrics read ‘Damn, I wish
I was a lesbian…’ and that’s all it took for me to fall in
love. The Quiz is an intelligent and
quirky song that I immediately was drawn to.
« Dressy Bessy.
This band pretty much defies all definition. Electronica and rock with a bit of
classy jazz and awesome vocals, Dressy Bessy has got
it going on. Check out Electrified
and jam along.
« Amy Winehouse.
There are no words to describe how much I love Amy Winehouse.
Her voice takes me back to the 60’s (when I wasn’t even a twinkle
in my parent’s eyes, for they were both young children themselves) but
her lyrics are thoroughly modern and hip. I can’t even pick a favorite
song that I have of hers, but one that I enjoy listening to a lot would be Me & Mr. Jones.
« Rainer Maria. I first discovered this
group through a website for fan-made Buffy music videos (subsequently, the same
way I found Tegan and Sara) and fell in love right away with Atropine which was set the death of Tara
and the magical fall of
« Eisley. This
« The Murmurs. Though
this band has dismantled and become a few different bands, I will always love
what they made. Fronted by Leisha Hailey and her best
friend Heather Reid, this all-girl group sings lyrics like “trip fit, go ahead, kiss me again; I always
like it when it ends” you know they have to be good. Have at Genius and Big Talker. Also check out Gush (what The Murmurs evolved from) and
« Holly Brook. With a splash of
teenage regret and a hint of adult maturity, Holly Brook’s music always
aims to please. Giving it Up for You
is a sweet and simple love-type song that leaves you wanting more. If you love
acoustic as much as me, you will surely find something to love in Holly.
« Kill Paradise, The
Broadway, The
Autobiography, and The
Midas Well. The reason they are all on the same line is because the bands
all consist of the same people. Nick Cocozzella, the
only member of Kill Paradise, is also in the other three bands. The Broadway is
more of a rap style, while the other three are very electronica, indie, and pop-ish. The songs I suggest you listen to right
now are Katie and I and RCNK (Kill
Paradise), My Neighbor is a Porn Star
(The Midas Well, about ‘Girl Next Door’), Risky Business and Speakerbox Chocolate
(The Broadway), Destroyed by High (The Autobiography.)
« Meg and Dia.
What can I say about these two sisters that hasn’t
been said before? They pretty much rock my socks off. Monster is a song that makes my skin tingle and my blood run cold,
despite it’s amazing rock and the unique voices
of these two girls. It has a lot of personal meaning for me, and I also love Cardigan Weather.
« Missy Higgins. I love Missy Higgins
like a fat kid hates exercise. Yeah, I said it. This Australian makes me want
to hop on a piano and sing, though it’s highly unlikely I would ever be
even a quarter as good as she is. One of my all time favorite songs is This is How it Goes.
Books
« Spotlight on: "Such a Pretty
Girl" by Laura Wiess
It speaks on a subject that is raw, that is tragic, and it sends a message that
illustrates just how wrong, how bad things can be for victims. A tale of abuse
and the mental anguish that ensues afterword.
I found myself sympathizing, agonizing and cheering for young Meredith, who was
stripped of every ounce of truth she ever knew, by the very people who brought
her into this world and were supposed to love, nurture, protect and care for
her.
